Wales Set to Challenge Anyone in FIFA World Cup Playoff Draw

Wales football team celebration

The team has secured eight of their recent sixteen matches with manager Craig Bellamy

The team's sights are squarely on Thursday's World Cup play-off draw as they await discovering their semi-final and possible final rivals.

Having ended as runners-up in their qualifying group following a decisive 7-1 triumph over North Macedonia – their largest win since 1978 – Wales will host the semi-final match on home soil.

They will meet either Albania, Bosnia, the Kosovan team or Ireland in that fixture on 26 March.

Ex- Wales forward Rob Earnshaw believes the Dragons will relish a match against whichever team following their latest performance at Cardiff City Stadium.

"I'm familiar with Craig Bellamy, I played with him and his mindset is 'give us anyone, we're ready'," Earnshaw said.

"Many supporters were asking recently, 'should we really want Ireland as it's that derby feel?'. I think a number of people didn't. But for me, that could be incredible.

"So it's that type of situation, yes, we'll take Kosovo or the Bosnians and the Albanians are not bad and Republic of Ireland, of course, they're a capable team so it will be challenging.

"However the sense is that we'll take anyone right now and it doesn't matter, and a lot of that is down to Craig Bellamy."

Potential Play-off Semifinal Rivals Evaluated

Wales sit 34th in the FIFA rankings, with the Albanian team 61st, Republic of Ireland 62nd, Bosnia-Herzegovina 75th and Kosovo 84th.

Albania enjoyed a strong qualification campaign, with their only defeats suffered at the hands of their group winners England, who secured full points without conceding a solitary goal.

Burnley's Armando Broja and Lazio's Elseid Hysaj are among the Red and Blacks's more notable players, although it was former Inter Milan, Barcelona and Watford forward Rey Manaj who topped their scoring chart in the qualifiers with three goals.

Notably, Albania have not yet earned a spot for a World Cup, though they participated at Euro 2016 and the 2024 Euros, not managing to reach the last 16 on each occasions.

While Slovenia and Sweden had torrid runs, with both failing to win a qualification match, Group B was a straight shootout between Switzerland and the Kosovan team.

The Switzerland ended the six-game campaign 3 points clear of Kosovo, whose one loss was at the hands of the pool winners.

Kosovo include former Manchester City keeper Arijanet Muric and Mallorca's Vedat Muriqi – his country's historic leading goalscorer – in a team aiming for a first major tournament appearance.

They have not yet faced Wales.

Bosnia-Herzegovina were defeated just once in qualifying, and claimed a point more than Wales managed in their 8 games, but still ended two points behind of their group winners Austria.

They were 13 minutes away from securing a place at the finals, but Michael Gregoritsch's leveler for the Austrians ensured the teams drew in the last game of qualifying and Ralf Rangnick's team topped the pool.

Wales have failed to beat the Bosnian side in four attempts but experienced a unforgettable loss against the Dragons as they qualified for Euro 2016 under Chris Coleman even after the defeat.

As his nation's historic top goalscorer and record appearance player, former Manchester City striker Edin Dzeko, now at Fiorentina, is undoubtedly Bosnia-Herzegovina's star player.

The veteran was his squad's top scorer in the qualifiers with 5 goals.

And finally, we have Republic of Ireland.

Having secured only a single point from their opening three qualifiers, Heimir Hallgrímsson's side surged into the playoffs with successive wins against Armenia, Portugal and Hungary.

Troy Parrott netted both goals against Euro 2016 winners Portugal before bagging a hat-trick – with the final goal arriving in the 96th minute – as the Republic of Ireland stunned Hungary to secure runner-up spot in their group in dramatic fashion.

Talisman Seamus Coleman had a vital role in his team's resurgence while Brentford goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher has secured the starting position his to keep.

The Republic of Ireland are without a win in their past 4 encounters with Wales, losing three of these, although James McClean broke the hearts of the Welsh fans as Martin O'Neill's men won a crucial World Cup qualifier at Cardiff City Stadium in 2017.
