The English golfer Wins the Abu Dhabi Title in Dramatic Play-Off Battle Against Fellow Englishman Fleetwood
Aaron Rai demonstrated exceptional composure to claim the prestigious Abu Dhabi title on the final day, defeating his compatriot in a tense playoff after a topsy-turvy last day of competition.
The Englishman sank a decisive birdie from around eight feet to clinch the victory, echoing his sole prior tournament success at the Scottish Open in 2020, which was also a playoff win against Fleetwood.
Sunday's Play Excitement
The champion started the final round with a one-shot advantage over fellow Englishman Fleetwood and Danish golfer Højgaard. He ended up with a overall score of twenty-under after a topsy-turvy, five-under closing round that featured seven birdie putts and two bogeys.
The challenger moved a stroke clear with two holes remaining after a birdie putt on the 16th, but Rai tied it up again on the seventeenth and then missed a ten-foot birdie putt to claim victory on the last green.
Play-Off Decider
This set up a play-off at Yas Links where the eventual winner prevailed to claim the title and $1.5 million (£1.13m) in winnings.
{“Tommy is a phenomenal player and an even more individual. To play with him the final two rounds was truly memorable,” stated the winner, the present 30th-ranked player globally. “You’re so concentrated on your game and staying in the zone, it’s hard to describe at the present how it feels. It is amazing to be stood here.”
