Harvard ex-president Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board

Corporate Departure
The former official declared he would withdraw from public positions after House committee released his frequent correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein

Former US treasury secretary the Harvard professor is exiting the board at the artificial intelligence firm, just several days after a collection of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

The economist remarked in an announcement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, enthusiastic about the prospects of the enterprise, and look forward observing their advancement".

The prominent academic, who formerly presided over Harvard University, declared on Monday that he would be stepping back from public responsibilities due to his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.

Email Communications

The freshly disclosed emails revealed that the economist corresponded with the financier until the eve of his 2019 arrest for alleged human trafficking of minors.

In additional comments, the technology organization stated it understood Summers' decision to depart.

"We value his numerous inputs and the viewpoint he offered to the directors," the organization remarked.

Legislative Background

This development arrives after the two houses of the legislative branch voted on this week to pass a measure that would compel the US justice department to make public its files on Epstein.

The measure will then move to the office of US President Donald Trump for endorsement. Trump has said he intends to sign the legislation, after reversing his position on the subject following objections from his followers.

Correspondence Findings

A group of Epstein-related messages released by the Congressional committee days ago included several well-known personalities in the billionaire's past associates, without suggesting any illegal behavior by those figures.

The emails indicated that the economist and Jeffrey Epstein often met for meals, with he often attempting to introduce Summers to prominent global figures.

Individual Statement

After the emails were made available with the public, the former official said he accepted "total ownership for my ill-advised judgment to persist in corresponding with Jeffrey Epstein".

He further stated that he hoped "to restore confidence and fix connections with the individuals closest to me".

Career Background

The professor held high-level positions under party leaders; acting as treasury secretary under Bill Clinton, and as leader of the White House economic team under President Obama.

He led the university from the early 2000s and is still a academic there. When announcing his withdrawal from public commitments previously on Monday, he indicated he would continue his academic responsibilities.

Other Impacts

Following his statement on earlier this week, the Washington think tank, a progressive think tank in the capital where he was a researcher, verified that Summers was no longer affiliated with the institution.

Summers joined the board of the technology firm, which creates the language model, in last year - following a unsuccessful effort to remove its top executive OpenAI's head.
